It’s a matter of comparing apples to oranges. I would say it is human nature that it may discourage someone and possibly make them feel like they are doing something wrong, or might as well give up, since they did not achieve what you achieved by the time it took you.

It is also human nature to want some encouragement, and it may work the other way, to encourage those who can’t yet see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Here are a few reasons why it’s apples and oranges.

* What skills did you bring to the table in the first place?

Do you have Computer skills? Writing skills? Marketing skills? Business management skills? Having any of these will give you a leg up over someone who has none of these. So the learning curve is going to be longer for those people who do not.

Note: Key factors here are determination and commitment though, so if you have those attributes, it is more important and relevant than having or not having any of the above skills.

* How much time do you have to devote to learning how to and promoting your business?

Part time? Full time? Do you have a day job? Commute? Are you laid off? Do you struggle with a disability? Do you have a big family or other issues that take up the majority of your time? Are you just an internet marketing hobbyist, satisfied with just making a few extra bucks, or are you planning on quitting that day job and working from home full time?

* What season of the year did you start your internet business?

For example, Summers are incredibly slow for internet marketing every year due to vacations and good weather where people are out of doors or away from home and are not online. So you can see here 3 months in the Summer is different than 3 months in the Fall. So when I say it took me 3 months, with everything else being the same, it could be 6 months for you.

Holidays people are spending money on gifts and traveling and not so much online looking to start a home business or having spare money. The entire holiday season sales can be off.

* How is the economy?

The year I started, the rate of unemployment was 10% so there were plenty of people looking to start a home business, but the year you started it was 5% and people were gainfully employed and not worried they couldn’t find another job if they were suddenly to be ‘outplaced’.

It can work either way with this factor – some people will hold on to every last dime because they are fearful of or even anticipating losing their job, and not want to risk their money starting a business; or they can be looking down the road and say, hey tomorrow is not promised, I better prepare for the worst case scenario and start my own business in my spare time, in case I lose my job.

* How much is your operating budget for your business?

If you are employed and have a little extra money, you are in the right place. If you don’t have a job and are living on disability or unemployment, then you would not be able to start a business right now, unless you are willing to incur credit card debt or use your savings. If you have neither credit nor savings, you are not going to feel like you can risk your rent money (AND SHOULD NOT).

Note: There are many ways to promote your business for free, and some are more effective over time than some of the paid advertising methods; so not having money does not mean you can’t run a business from home successfully – it just means you may need to work a little harder and it may take you a little longer to build momentum. Again – however, determination makes up for anything you may not have otherwise.

More important than competing or keeping up with someone else’s statistics, is doing the very best that YOU can. Set goals for YOURSELF. Make them small, achievable goals so that you won’t get discouraged. Make short, mid-way and long term goals and focus on your target.

What is the internet if it isn’t a ‘garden of earthly delights’. Everything is here at our fingertips that we can possibly imagine. I have always loved the Beatles’ lyrics, “arrive without traveling”.  Truly, this is an entirely appropriate description of the internet.

As time has gone by, I have found more and more resources online. The natural progression for me after email, shopping, research, banking, and job search, is to even earn an income online! Actually it was the job search that finally did it. As they say, it’s a job trying to find a job.

I decided it was the perfect time to start what I thought in the beginning would be a part-time business. As I wasted more time looking at job postings and sending my resume, I began to encounter home business and work at home advertisements. This idea has appealed to me for a long time before this juncture.

However, I believe it was my most recent on the job experience, and subsequent absence of ‘luck’ in finding even a lateral opportunity that convinced me – I am going to make a ‘job’ and I am not going to subject myself to the stress and futility of ‘working for the man’ EVER again, God willing.

So, I found the path and began my journey. One word that stuck with me throughout has been ‘diversify’. I first thought this meant, join several affiliate programs, so I did . I also thought it meant use a lot of different strategies, and so I did. This quickly progressed into acquiring some domains to start some websites, and I did so.

Then I was exposed to the concept of multiple streams of income. This definitely is related to ‘diversify’. This was the way to go, at least to the next plateau in building a business. I had multiple websites that are dissociated and I know now this was premature in that it requires more expense – for advertising, for maintenance, etc.  A friend said to me: You know the phrase, ‘ready, aim, fire’? Well, newbies do ‘ready, fire, aim’.  Uh-huh, well thousands of dollars later,  I am living proof!

Now I have a website that offers 5 different streams of income in one place. Advertise once, pay maintenance fees once. Everything I do to promote my site, subsequently exposes my prospects to all of these programs and services, which they may choose individually, or as a package like I did. It’s money either way.

Multiple streams of income provides leverage. If one thing isn’t going too well, there is a chance others will carry the day. Everything was coming up roses, right? Well, yes, for a good little part-time job. It takes time to learn the effective strategies – some by instruction, more so in my case, by trial and error. It takes time to learn and use the right resources. It takes still more time to build momentum. You mean it is not just throw up a site and they will come?

Problem with the part-time job plan was by this time, my full-blown, total addiction to working from home online – and with no distractions like a dumb day job just to keep the roof over my head and/or to help finance my budding business! Although it was entirely necessary (and getting desperate) to have resources, the idea of a day job grew more and more reprehensible.

The few interviews I did get, I began to sub-consciously self-sabotage. The more they leaned forward (a sign of interest) the quicker I would say something stupid and watch them wilt.  At first I would just chide myself on the way to the car, ‘dimwit! why did you have to say that?’ After a few times, I would just laugh. The last time, I got lost on the way to the interview – not the best first impression, either being clueless or being late. I knew I didn’t do it on purpose, but this was when I realized, I can’t go back, I can only move forward.

What was I to do – Diversify! Buy one more domain!  Exercise my options – Generate more multiple streams of income. This time, it can’t be like marketing, where you put money out and hope for an ROI at some point (and support yourself somehow in the meantime) . I needed money now, something I could just do the work and get paid. (just like a j-o-b)

I had seen the new job category ‘virtual assistant’ – now doesn’t that sound like something you can do from home to earn an income online! So I thought of all the skills that I had learned over the years, the things that I really feel I do well, and especially the things I like to do most. I offered to do them for some of the people who were already earning (substantial) money from internet marketing. Kind of low key – “I have a new website, this is the url…”, “if you ever need any help…” or “if you know of anyone…” – This was my bingo moment! This worked and it would work right now!

So within my portfolio or multiple streams of income online, there is even a day job I do from home! It was like all the praying and anxiety cancelled each other out, and I had my ‘ticket to ride’. I now earn  ‘decent’ income from home as a virtual assistant. This pays the bills. This keeps me from worrying about how I will survive while I build my internet marketing businesses. In fact this IS PART OF my internet marketing business. One of my best (at this point) multiple streams of income!

Rags to Riches! With this income, combined with my other online income, I have already replaced the salary I received with many years of experience from mega-corporations! In only 2 years working from home online! I am where I wanted to be and now, I can move on up from here. I love the way internet marketers say ’see you at the top’ – and we really all believe we will get to the top of our game. Maybe not today, or even tomorrow, but we WILL get there someday! …and it is so much fun getting there!

Setting achievable goals, planning, and taking consistent action toward your goals – that is the formula to produce multiple streams of income online or anywhere else for that matter. Affiliate marketing is such an ingenious concept, really. It is very advantageous for both the affiliate and the affiliate program. To those just starting out with their dream to have their own business, but no real talent or creativity yet, it is the perfect ‘foot in the door’.

What is an affiliate program? An affiliate program is a company that has a product and/or service to sell. They offer to let affiliates join the program and provide them with their own identification or member number, give them personalized marketing tools, such as a website, ’splash page’, banners, and sales copy, etc. 

The affiliate is not an employee, but is a private contractor in a sense.  As such, they are not paid a salary and are responsible for the cost of their advertising efforts done on behalf of the program.  If the affiliate makes a sale, they are given a percentage as a commission.

The affiliate program provides front-end sales and customer support, payment processor, inventory, order fulfillment, shipping and handling and back-end customer support, (refunds, etc.). What they get in exchange for allowing the affiliate to offer the company’s product and paying them a commission, is that they are gaining greater exposure – free advertising and marketing which is paid for by the affiliate.

In addition to the affiliate having a product to sell and receiving a commission, the affiliate is also usually eligible to receive commissions for referrals of other affiliates to the program.  They would make sometimes an up-front bonus and/or monthly residual income from this referral, as well as second-tier commissions when their referral makes sales or referrals. 

Sometimes this arrangement is referred to as multi-level marketing, for obvious reasons.  Most legitimate companies that are sales related have this same type of structure. This is a win-win situation for all concerned.

This residual income is different from a one-time sale of the product or service itself.  The residual income concept is particularly conducive to ‘building’ a business, in that you can continue to derive income from work that you do once.

Of course as with anything, there will be recidivism, so this doesn’t mean you can ever rest on your laurels.  You must continue to take consistent action in order to maintain whatever level of income you require.

I notice a lot of fairly new “would be” internet business owners posting questions in various internet marketing forums about things like “randomizers,” “investments,” and other scams.

These “newbies” are looking at these programs and their offerings with serious interest and feeling the temptation that comes when promised easy money.

I am going to be strait forward and completely honest:

1. When you are getting started online it is hard to hear the legit opportunities because of the multitude of scams and ponzi schemes.

2. Opportunities that offer you fast money by making an “investment” into a “matrix” or “randomizer” or other such Ponzi scheme are almost all illegal.

3. There are so many illegal schemes online that it may seem like very few are exposed and prosecuted by the authorities but this does not make them any more legit.

4. In the US 70% of your revenues must come from the direct sale of goods or services and only 30% can come from the recruitment of other distributors in order for the opportunity to be legal.

This is known as the 70/30 rule and is used by the feds when taking on mlm and other opportunities.

Otherwise the companies are getting into “ponzi” and “chain” schemes which are federal offenses in the US.

5. “Referral sales” are illegal in all 50 states. A referral sale is where you offer a discount or other value in exchange for “leads” or the names of prospective purchasers (do a search for legal info regarding “referral sales” on Google and you will learn some very interesting facts).

9. Self deception is a destructive illness. I got on the internet for the first time in 2001 and began researching internet business. I was stuck by the amount of “investment” and “matrix” opportunities that were available. Many of them were “ground floor” startup opportunities that claimed they were going to sell a product or service once they got off the ground but that they needed a few “investors” to grab “top positions” before they “launched.”

I found that almost all of them never actually offered a legit product or service and operated as an unabashed and obvious pyramid scheme. Most sites would disappear within a year and I would see the same founders starting different opportunities with varying “payout” plans all of them Ponzi.

I also saw that some of these Ponzi creators spent time posing as “consumer advocates” for those who had lost money in other schemes. These ponzi scammers would lure in victims of other failed ponzi schemes by publishing submitted complaints on their websites in behalf of the victims. They would act as if they were trying to assist the victims in recovering their lost “investments.”

I would then see these very same “advocates,” after building a list of victims sufficiently large enough who trusted them, launch their own ponzi schemes with claims like “everyone gets paid” and “guaranteed not to fail.” They would tout themselves as saviors claiming that no one would get hurt and that they were out to help everyone who lost money when other companies failed.

10. A majority… let me say that again a MAJORITY of opportunities I see advertised in safelists are illegal investment schemes.

The reason for this is because most people who are attracted to these type of opportunities cannot build a mailing list to market to (the reason is because the mainstream business world immediately sees you as illegit) and they congregate in safe lists in hopes of spreading their opportunity virally.

Most members of safe list communities (the one’s who spend every day reading and mailing safelists and investing in ponzi) are inexperienced deceived and looking for easy money.

*I know I will get heat for saying that but I also know it is true. There are legit ways to use safe lists but the majority of the opportunities advertised in them are complete garbage.*

11. Light attracts light. Darkness attracts darkness. Scammers attract easy money seekers who have deceived them selves into believing their lies.

12. There are many members of marketing forums making money in illegal investment and ponzi schemes. There are many members of marketing forums loosing money in illegal investment and ponzi schemes.

13. If you align your self with such opportunities (even if you make money) your business will be seen as illegit and your own reputation will be tarnished by those whom you associate with.

Not to long ago dozens of members of a popular internet marketing fourm were lured into investing in a software development opportunity run by a well known marketer that was never fully delivered.

I settled out of court with that marketer to regain my own investment back after I threatened to bring in the FBI and SEC.

I have personally interviewed attorneys, legal experts, authors, and a federal expert witnesse on the subject of mlm, one up referral, and ponzi style compensation programs during my own investigation into the online “money for nothing” phenomenon.

16. You should also read what the SEC has to say about “internet investment” schemes.

It may shock you to know that:

“…the following companies must file reports with the SEC: All U.S. companies with more than 500 investors and $10 million in net assets;”

Companies that fail to do that are in violation of federal laws and many cases send the owners of such companies to prison.

The SEC governs most “investment” opportunities and when their hammer falls on a company it is not pretty.
