Sometimes my timing is not good. Case in Point. In 2004 I had a good job. I loved the work, but was increasingly unhappy with the hostile corporate environment. In the world we are in today, you just do not quit a good job even if you are miserable, unless you have the promise of another at least equally good job.

For quite a while the bright point of my day was lunch. Hey is this a re-run? My mother used to say I went to school to eat my lunch, now my career is turning out the same?

I was addicted to going to a certain discount store across the street almost everyday at lunch and it really made me feel good to buy nice clothes and other things to compensate for my feeling of dread.

When they moved the store out of the neighborhood there were months of sales on the already reduced prices. I was really lost and bewildered when they finally shut the doors. Cold turkey, baby.

What do I do at lunch now? So I ventured out and walked a few blocks and decided to look at cars just for fun. There was a super-charged beauty, the same make as the older car I had, but newer and an even soupier upgraded version with many more ‘bells and whistles (satellite radio and Onstar to name a few). … Omigod, and it was on sale!

Since the one I had used regular gas, I didn’t even think to ask, just assuming the new version would be the same. Not so. Premium only. You think that is dumb? I was too embarassed to take it back when I found out. Couldn’t deal with another hostile environment even for the day or two it would take to wiggle out.

Besides the interest was really good and the car is a dream. I fell in love with it the first time I drove it on the freeway, and it was just what I needed to feel good, especially when the super-charger kicks in and feels like it is flying.

… but now the fun starts on two fronts. About a month later, my company announces it is downsizing in yet another merger, and horror and ecstacy at the same moment, I am getting laid off! But I have a car payment now! How can this happen NOW?

Just about that same time, gas prices started climbing (and you know they have not stopped climbing for 4 years now). Of course premium is way more expensive than anything but diesel. OK so I got lemons.

Now for the lemonade: I didn’t need to panic exactly, because I had months of severence pay and then unemployment insurance would kick in. I needed time to recover from the post traumatic stress of 6 years in a place that was nearly always hostile from day one and went steadily downhill.

Then I planned to work contract jobs while I looked for another job. I registered with every conceivable online agency and spent endless, fruitless hours trolling the job boards. I got a few interviews that were nightmares, and a few contracts, but I noticed that well, the thrill is gone. I really love to work, but I began to realize I just don’t like the whole dynamic and being vulnerable.

Somewhere along the line, I discovered the concepts of ‘internet home based business’ and ‘work from home on the internet’ opportunities and started to check them out. I tried a few, and spent hours and hours online, and spent even more money trying to find a way to earn an income from home. I was swirling in information to the point of delerium sometimes. Strange new territory…

It got pretty scary after a year when the money was running out and the debt was mounting. Nothing was really working. I would make not-very-funny jokes about maybe I would end up living in my car with a laptop.

…BUT all the while my car was parked (which brings to mind another not-funny joke of mine that you can literally watch the gas gauge plummet). Now it is four years later and Praise the Lord, the car is STILL PARKED 99% of the time, and no I am not living in the car! I eventually found a couple of different sources of income on the internet and I have already matched the income I was making after 15 years experience in corporate.

In learning to write ads and copy for internet marketing, I often mentioned not having to commute to work when you work from home. I was thinking of the stress of traffic and road rage, parking and the nightmare freeway looking like an endless parking lot at most hours.

I even wrote one about ‘you can’t go home from the office when you work from home’. I still struggle with that one, but the main thing is, everytime I see the price of gas, (now around $4.50 for premium here), I realize that the $500 a month I calculated that I saved back in 2004 by not going to work outside my home, has increased exponentially and would probably be $1000 by now!

Bottom line – bet you thought I would never get here ->> is STAY HOME and make lemonade. Keep the money you earn in your pocket and don’t let the gas pump have it! Find a way! If I can do it, so can you!

By the way the ideal way to do this is while you still have a job, starting part time – so that if something happens to your job, you already have a foundation to start with; not to mention a way to survive while you figure it all out. Even if you have to sacrifice some entertainment – make a list of those type of ‘expendable’ expenditures and see how much money you can come up with to create an operating budget.

Make a list of all the skills and talents you have that you made your living with and see how you can do it online, and learn what the various services people working on the internet use.

Get some free online training, find some products to sell, get involved in some organizations, join business forums and community sites and network, network, network.

Hey, isn’t it everybody’s dream to work around the clock? No? Well how about when you can take a nap whenever you want or take a time out to relax or get some exercise? Even a day off whenever you want, my pretty?

Let’s all hoist a nice tall glass of lemonade and make a toast to working from home on the internet with our vehicles PARKED! Cheers!

Have you discovered lately that you’re no longer satisfied with your job? if so,then, don’t be discouraged, you can start making money online with your own home business.

More and more people are turning to home businesses to meet their financial demands. You, too, can be part of this tendency – and you can use the Internet to turn your home business into an online money making business. All you have to do is find your niche and sculpt it, and you can make money through your talents in no time.

There are numerous home business ideas that will surely match your taste and expertise. All you have to do is find the best program and blend all the necessary essentials to get started.

The following suggestions are all possibilities for making money online.

Join an affiliate program and learn the ropes free from whatever information you can glean. You will get the basic idea of what is necessary to have a splash page or ad, and with a good program, they should show you how to market the product. Most suggestions should be applicable to any business you want to promote.

Many individuals pay good money for freelance jobs from writers. If one of your skills is writing, then all you have to do is offer your services as a content writer. Go to internet marketing forums and find areas where you can hook up with people looking for your services, as well as place free classified ads online.

If you are great at computers and programming, you can offer online computer help, or tutor less knowledgeable users for a fee. You can also offer to do basic maintenance for websmasters, such as adding graphics, or if you are very skilled, designing websites. (”very skilled” can even mean you know how to use an editor application that does the programming for you).

Can you make costume jewelry? Put your talents to work and advertise your products online. Offer a shopping cart on your site and delivery services for your potential customers

If you own antiques you don’t want anymore, take good pictures of them and advertise them online to make money. You can also try to sell them on Ebay as well as any other items lying around in your house you don’t use.

If you are skilled at organizing and fixing things, then write ebooks or reports on plumbing, home organizing, housekeeping, cleaning, or whatever service you specialize in. You would be very surprised how some people have made money on a simple little report on how to take care of a small animal. If you look around you will find that you know how to do a lot of things that you could share and make some extra money.

Are you a good cook and/or an expert with different dieting programs? Write a cookbook or offer your services as a fitness and diet consultant. Do some research and offer to share what you find.

Maybe you’re a designer, then try your hand at designing shirts or decorations for the house. People are always looking for unique items to decorate their homes or give as gifts.

Bottom line is, you can make money online by using your skills, hobbies and work experiences to start a home business and be prosperous with it. You have to start somewhere and you may have to try a few different things before you find your niche. You can do it if you try!

These days many people are quitting their day jobs for convenient work from home opportunities. There are many reasons why they choose to do so.

Some earn cash by making money online in order to take care of their children and still make money each month to pay their bills.

Others prefer to work from home because they are tired of traveling morning and night to work. For those who are looking for the perfect work at home business, there are a few elements that apply for a best rated home business.

When an individual chooses to make money online from home, it’s necessary to have agreeable and productive work surroundings. This usually involves having a home office set up so that they can work in a home environment and yet not have to deal with the distractions that may arise. A good work atmosphere is one factor which increases their chances of earning cash from their online business.

In order to make money online, the business itself must be profitable. If a business is not making money , it can’t be considered the best business possible. After all, businesses are mainly about revenue. A business that is lucrative is one that rates as a well founded money making home business.

When people own a business online, they are usually selling a product or using their work experiences by offering their service to customers. One must have a business that sells good products or offers valuable services in order to make money with their home business.

If the business has a high demand for its offers, it’s naturally it is more likely to do well. That’s why it is important to study ‘niches’. Find one that is popular, and that you can relate to yourself. Hard to sell something unless you believe in it.

Making money online working from home provides an abundance of opportunities. It affords a way for the business owners to grow a steady income and also allows them to take care of their other needs.

Parents are able to stay at home with their children. Or perhaps one is a care giver and has some spare time to make extra money.

Many business opportunity seekers are planning for or already retired, and realize it will be tough to live on social security or a pension.

Others just want to keep their minds active. A money-making hobby is a better idea than board games or sedentary television viewing.

There are truly many ways to make money working from home. Why not join some free affiliate programs or sell digital information products, or even have a free shopping mall from Amazon.com. This is a good way to start out with almost no capital outlay.

In an ideal situation, if you want to build a business, you could start to save money you make from the free programs to finance having your own website.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure to have a plan (plans can change as you learn more) and set short term, mid-way and long term goals. Planning and goals will help you stay committed and focused. With work, time, and a little luck, you can make money right from the comfort of your home office.

Making money online with a home business doesn’t have to be full time. You can start in your free time at first, after or before you go to work. By starting small you can build up your business while still making money with your fulltime job.

Starting a money making business online is a risk the same way an offline business is, with the difference being that your online business doesn’t require big capital, thereby making the risk minimal.

Making money online can be gratifying. It can also be frustrating at times if your business doesn’t take off immediately or you only draw the benefits after a certain period.

Here are ways to choose the right money making online business that’s right for you:

Write down your abilities and aptitudes as well as your expertise from work or business experiences. Now, make a list of a few business ideas you are interested in and match it with your aptitudes and abilities list. That will give you a pretty good idea of what business you should get into.

There are lots of hobbies that can be turned into a money making online business like catering, gardening, sewing, knitting, event organizing events such as weddings, birthdays etc. If you are a professional, then you can offer your services as a doctor, a veterinarian, a lawyer, or notary etc. If you don’t like selling, perhaps you can try training or coaching. There are other areas of expertise which can turn into a money making online business. Actually the possibilities seem endless.

If you do decide to start your online business, you should make sure you have the financial means to operate the business before it brings you profit, as contrary to the hype, everything takes time. You plant the seeds and then wait for the garden to reap a harvest. Never happens overnight.

Also it’s best to pick an online business that will match your personal situation. If you have children in the house and your main goal in starting a home based business is to be around for your kids, then select one that won’t require you to be out of the home for long periods of time for client calls. Warn your family about the requirements of the home based business so they know what to expect once the business starts.

Running you own money making business is entirely different from your fulltime work. Try to keep yourself motivated and confident because you don’t have a boss to tell you your doing a great job. You have to be a little hard on yourself and your schedule to make your online money making business work, but it will be well worth it!

Most home-based entrepreneurs self-finance the founding of their businesses. Home-based business owners are independent, and most dislike the notion of being beholden to a lender.

However, there comes a time in the life of most successful businesses when self-financing isn’t enough. Perhaps you have an order that you can’t fulfill because you lack sufficient capital to purchase the supplies. Or maybe your sales volume is growing so fast that you’re unable to re-supply while waiting for your accounts receivable to come due. Either way, if you need outside financing, there are plenty of options.

The Small Business Administration

The Small Business Administration (SBA) is an agency of the federal government, and the leading facilitator of small business loans. Contrary to popular belief, the SBA doesn’t usually loan money – it simply guarantees the repayment of the loans. This gives traditional lenders (banks and credit unions) a greater incentive to make small business loans, since if you don’t pay them back, the SBA will. But that doesn’t mean that you’re off the hook – far from it. If you fail to repay an SBA-backed loan, the federal government will be your new creditor, and that’s not a creditor you want to have.

Types of SBA Loans

The 7A Loan is the SBA’s most common loan program. Funds from 7A loans can be used for almost any business purpose, including the establishment of a revolving line of credit or the purchase of inventory. Loans are typically for amount in excess of $50,000 with a maximum guaranty of $1.5 million. The federal government does not permit lenders to impose any balloon payments, points, or application fees on 7A applicants.

The 504 Loan is a safer, more secure loan for lenders to make. Funds from 504 loans can only be used to purchase securable assets such as property, plant, and equipment. 504 loans cannot be used to consolidate debt, establish a line of credit, or even to purchase inventory.

Furthermore, at least one job must be created or maintained for every $50,000 worth of 504 loan funding. Most home-based business owners have no interest in building factories or buying bulldozers, so the 504 loan is probably not applicable.

A great loan program for home-based business owners is the MicroLoan Program. This program provides loans of up to $35,000, mostly to start-up or recently formed businesses. Minimum loan amounts are much smaller, and the average loan is for just $13,000. MicroLoans must be repaid within a maximum of six years, and owners of home-based corporations will be required to sign a “personal guarantee,” holding them personally liable should their corporation default on the loan.

Alternative Sources of Financing

Thanks to the internet, there are new alternatives to financing through traditional banks. Some reputable web sites connect individual lenders and borrowers without the middle man. Using these sites, you can post a loan listing along with pictures and information about your business. You set the maximum interest rate you will pay, and prospective lenders can decide whether or not they’re interested in funding you. Lenders are able to see a summarized version of your credit report, and you may also be required to submit some form of income verification. If more than enough lenders are interested in funding you, then they bid down your interest rate and save you money! Once your loan is funded, the amount is deposited in your checking account, from which your monthly loan payments is withdrawn. All loans are for three years, and are fully amortized – no balloon payments, no surprises, no catch.

If you have a grandparent or great-uncle who would like to give you a loan, the internet provides great alternatives for you, as well. Web sites specializing in family loans help eliminate stress by drawing up legally binding documents, and then administering the loans. This means that your monthly payments are withdrawn from your checking account and deposited into your lender’s. There won’t be awkward moments at family get-togethers – these sites do the dirty work; sending the payment reminders and collecting the payments.

Lack of access to capital is the #1 killer of small companies, but as you can see, there are multiple sources of financing for growing home-based businesses. Don’t let a lack of funds stunt your company’s growth. The money is out there if you just know where to look.

10 Things You Can Do to Stay Out of Trouble

Are you going global in your home based business? Opportunity knocked and you responded, but now you’re wondering about some new problems rearing their potentially ugly heads. Take spam laws, for instance. You have legitimate intentions, but how do you remain legal and legit?

Everybody hates spam. You really don’t want your hosting service provider to discontinue your website because they received spamming complaints, much less get into trouble with the trade commissions. But the structure of your business requires you to rely on a certain percentage of “hits” in response to your emails. What to do to stay in touch… all over the world?

In Europe and the UK, an EU “opt-in” directive is now in place and being upheld for international Internet marketers. Those who send commercial emails and mobile SMS messages without permission can now be fined thousands of dollars.

Countering the EU antispam legislation is the “CAN-SPAM Act,” passed in the United States in 2003. In case you’re wondering, the anagram stands for Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003. Known as the “opt-out” directive, this little number allows virtual spamming by placing the responsibility on the recipient to opt-out by replying to unsolicited commercial emails with a message to unsubscribe.

Yes, you read that right. Spamming is by no means illegal, provided you play by the rules. But the advice is to watch it, especially if you are in the business of global marketing via the Internet. Theoretically, U.S. citizens who break EU and UK antispam laws may be extradited, heavily fined and tried. And the possible prison penalties that came in the wake of the new Act in the U.S. aren’t anything to thumb your nose at either.

Take heed, global marketers, the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 is only the prelude. You don’t have to be an expert to predict that regulation for unsolicited email will continue to grow in future. So you should build your opt-in lists while you can, and as fast as possible, but do see it as your duty to use your lists responsibly, as your trusting subscribers so rightly deserve.

Now let’s take a look at what you, a legitimate non-spamming Internet marketer, can do to stay out of trouble as you continue to grow your mailing list:

Use only email addresses that you obtained legitimately

Consider using double opt-in lists.

If you want to play it completely safe, avoid purchasing leads altogether.

Keep any records that you have of your opt-in subscribers as proof (name, email address, IP address, date & time stamp etc.).

Never use anonymous remailers.

Clearly label your email as being a commercial message that “may contain advertising or solicitation”.

Never use misleading subject lines.

Always provide a real reply-to email address.

Always provide a postal address (a PO Box is always a good idea – you really don’t want to go public with your home address).

Always provide a working unsubscribe option.

This is by no means legal advice or intended as such — only your personal lawyer can provide you with that. Take notice of the above tips, think before you press “Send” and you will have a good chance of being left alone to do your thing by the spam police.

May you continue to have a smooth ride on the information superhighway and may your journey be a safe, enjoyable and fruitful one!

Copyright © Stone Evans, The Home Biz Guy

When you are starting out in a new home business and no one knows who you are, one of the greatest challenges you will face is how to drum up new business.

If there were not people in your community or marketplace that you knew who needed your products or services, you probably would not have started your business to begin with. But, once you have talked to those who you personally knew who needed your what you offer, then your next task is to find others who will help keep your doors open.

Many people know that they must turn to advertising at some point in the future, but they hope that day will be long down the road. For some, this utopian concept will come to fruition. But for the rest of us in the real world, we must come up with creative solutions for meeting our home business advertising needs while working within our budget.

Most people have a misconception about having to spend lots of money in order to advertise their home business. When you start out, you honestly will not have much money available for advertising, and if you do, you should still spend it wisely.

Before you jump headfirst into the world of advertising, let me share some of the lessons I have learned concerning this most important topic.

LESSON #1

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg to advertise your home business, unless you fail to plan and fail to test.

As much as is possible, you should always test your advertising. If you jump in and start
dumping tons of money in to advertising without first testing your advertising, you might find yourself broke and without sales at the end of the road. Most people who commit this error write off their failure on the home business they chose or the economy or any of a hundred other excuses. But, if they are unwilling to take responsibility for their mistake, they will never learn from their mistake. Don’t let this be you.

LESSON #2

All testing should be done in blocks. If you begin to advertise simultaneously in newspapers, radio and television, how will you know which advertising is bringing people to your cash register? You won’t. All you will know that something might be working, but you will not know what is actually doing the trick.

Even if you tell people in your advertising to tell you how they found you, my experience shows that fewer than 10% of the people ever will tell you anything — and those people who do may not even get the facts straight! You cannot rely on your customers to tell you what advertising is working for your home business. You must put in the extra effort to know for yourself.

LESSON #3

Only when you have a proven and solid advertising portfolio should you venture to drop big bucks in an advertising campaign. Even then, you should be careful to keep further measurements to determine how much the maximum advantage of an ad would be.
Sometimes you might be able to reach ten times as many people, but depending on the kind of media and other factors, the additional exposure will only generate twice as many sales. Keep your eye attuned to situations like this to get the most from your advertising dollars.

LESSON #4

As Lesson #3 illustrates, sometimes your best advertising investment may actually cost you less money. When you are first starting out, whether you are running a home business or a business outside of your home, you need to be able to get people talking and thinking about your business.

If you are busy testing ads in media’s such as the newspaper, magazines, radio, and television, you need to learn ways of promoting your business that do not require large cash expenditures. A few examples are:

· Word of Mouth
· Business Cards
· Press Releases
· Non-Primetime Ads on Radio and Television

Here is more information about each type of low-cost advertising:

WORD OF MOUTH

This of course is the cheapest kind of advertising on the planet — it does not cost you anything. Ask your customers if they know anyone who could also use your products or
services. When they are happy with your offerings and service, they will be willing to tell you whom you can contact, and they will pass the word for you.

BUSINESS CARDS

You can usually pick up 500 business cards for about $20. When you do, hand them out. Do not give more than a couple of cards to each person. If they need more cards from you, they will ask. Some people are known to network with others on a regular basis. Some of these people are also known to be always looking for an extra few bucks. With these people, you can suggest to them that if they write their name on the back of one
of your business cards and the card is presented to you, then you will pay a referral fee to them. You do not have to offer much — sometimes one dollar is enough. Look at your home business and your offerings and decide how much would be a good referral fee.

PRESS RELEASES

Press Releases are a good source for generating news about your home business. The business editor at your local newspaper is always on the lookout for a good business story to fill the business news section of the newspaper.

Of course, the business editor understands the economics of running a paper and is more inclined to run your story if you buy advertising in his/her publication, but will still print
stories for special events and openings.

The important thing to remember about Press Releases is that it must be constructed in the form of a news story. Even if you are a sole proprietorship, quotes from you should be written in a third person format: John Doe said, “Your quote here.”

A Press Release should pack the most important information at the beginning of the copy, and leave extra details towards the end. You should always provide the reporter who gets the task a simple and easy way for him/her to contact you directly. Often the reporter will want to contact you to get details that will enhance their take on your story.

NON-PRIMETIME ADS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION

Believe it or not, some of the best rates for radio and television are on the overnight and
non-primetime venues. These target times are not a total waste as they can easily keep the infomercial people in business.

These off-hours are just less populated than the primetime hours. Don’t be afraid to check your local radio and television rates for non-primetime hours to see what bargains may exist. With television, primetime is 7pm to 10pm. With radio, primetime is 8am to 5pm. This sure leaves a whole lot of hours available to advertise your home business at
discount rates!

IN CONCLUSION

When it comes down to it, there is a lot to understand about advertising, but when you have the basic knowledge down pat, everything will fall into place and bring more dollars to your bank account.

The various schemes in the genre described below are rampant on the many job posting websites on the internet. So beware.

They are all something like this:

Work-at-Home and help someone in another country to do their accounts receivable and deposits from their American customers! A few hours a day, a trip to the bank, and get a percentage or fee for each transaction. Perfect part-time job from home, to augment your earnings while starting a home business, or to complement your portfolio of ‘work-at-home’ jobs? No way!

You process funds for the company ostensibly because of the amount of time it takes a non-US company to have US funds available. You being in the US and having a bank account can handle this much easier and faster for them!

So you are receiving payments from their clients, and then transferring the funds to your ‘employer’s’ bank. After all, money orders and cashier’s checks are ‘guaranteed’ according to banks. No one has access to your bank account, in many of these schemes, so where’s the risk?

If the funds transferred to you are no good, you will be liable – in the US, in spite of the fact that banks will say money orders and cashiers checks are “guaranteed”, 2 weeks later, when they finally figure out it is a forgery. You have already transferred the money out and now YOU are liable to cover the funds. YOU can also face criminal fraud charges.

As if this isn’t bad enough, another dimension to these types of scams is that if you accept packages to reship – the merchandise turns out to have been purchased with a phony credit card – YOU are liable to the merchant who got burned and YOU can go to jail for receiving stolen merchandise – in the US, not to mention using the postal service to do it (when you ‘forward’ it to their customers).

It can keep getting worse – you may end up getting your identity stolen – some applications seem innocuous, in that they only ask for your birthday, street address, etc. – but sometimes if you are in the US, they will, as your ‘employer’ say they are required to have your ’social security number’ for tax purposes -

Your social security number can be used to open credit cards in your name, etc.; YOU will be liable for the charges, and your credit may be ruined – incredibly, it can be very difficult to prove you are you and it can take years…

Always be cautious when having business dealings with people in any other country. Only because it can be difficult to impossible to pursue them to get your money back or to prosecute them.Â

Have a frequent credit check done or invest in a credit monitoring service to be on top of it in case someone opens an account in your name, or you see charges that you did not incur.

Go to LooksTooGoodToBeTrue.com and then to ‘types of fraud’/'job scams’, to read the US take on this from our Federal Trade Commission. This is another address for the Internet Fraud Complaint Unit of the FBI. Check it out – it also has the descriptons of other types of fraud you will encounter on the internet.

Keeps getting worse in my mind, where you could even be laundering money for a terrorist organization and not know it…

These days, it seems like everyone wants to work from home and make money on the Internet. But before you even turn on your computer, the first question you have to ask yourself is whether you’re cut out for this kind of work.

The fact is, building a home-based business isn’t for everyone. Some people like the commute. They really do enjoy having a boss who tells them what to do, and they like the routine of working nine-to-five for an ordinary salary that can barely pay the mortgage. Personally, I think they’re nuts.

More reasonably, there are people who are concerned about the risk of starting up their own business. They’re not sure it’s worth the investment of time and money, and they’re scared of the responsibility that comes with running their own company. They wonder if there is another way to escape the rat race.

I’m sure there is. You could win the lottery or wait for your Aunt Sue to keel over and leave you her condo. Or maybe you could sit down with a pen and paper and draw the blueprint for “The Next Big Thing”. Anything can happen… Right?

For me, what happened was creating a successful, self-running Internet marketing system. It didn’t happen without effort. It didn’t happen without at least some initial investment of both time and money and, of course, it doesn’t happen now without me making sure that the taxes are filed and the paperwork is done. But it happened.

I’m my own boss. I work from home according to my own schedule and I get to pocket all the cash my business makes. If you’re prepared to give an e-business the time, the work and the money it needs to get started and get growing, it can happen for you too.
