Does just having a job mean you are a success? Not really, in my mind; but if you are conscientious and try to do a good job, and you do, then I believe this could be called success. Hopefully someone else will notice your efforts and at least appreciate, if not reward you for it.

Even if you never get credit for the extra work you do, or the fact that, unlike many workers, you don’t just go to work to occupy a chair for 8 hours. You have achieved what you set out to do – a good job; in your own mind, you can feel as though you have succeeded.

If you are one of those people that always feels capable of more, feel you are always under-employed and hence, under-compensated, it is hard to feel successful. You really have to do some self-talk about knowing you are better than that, and project that someday you will do more.

Someday, maybe you will wake up and say, life is too short, and I just can’t stand to be stifled. I want to achieve my dreams! I can do more, and I am going to do it! If you are stuck in a dead end job just for the benefits, it is sad. Someday you will hopefully get to the place where your dream is so real, that you know that some day you must, at any cost ===> Fire your boss! Yes! You just must!

You can’t run off half-cocked though, so you have to have a plan. Striking out on your own is no easy thing. You have to be willing to make sacrifices. It will be so worth it! Give yourself a short, mid-range and long range goal. For example, a short term goal is to start to build a business of your own in your spare time. Mid-range you are saving the extra money from your business and living the usual paycheck to paycheck life. Long range is you have replaced your salary, and who knows how much more you can be making!

Right NOW, start to build a part-time business in the evenings and on the weekends. Right here you will feel a huge surge of strength and excitement. You knew there had to be a way out of this maze that is your life as an employee. YOU have taken control of YOUR life. Think and plan what your business will be. Do some research on what it would involve to start it. Right here, you start telling yourself that you WILL be a success. You ARE a winner, and you CAN do this! Say it to yourself all day. Obstacles? Just go around them.

Project that the midway goal will be to have saved X amount of money and start to plan for the prison break. Realize that it takes much less money to work at home. When I stopped working, I realized a savings of $500 a month, just from my expenses for getting to and from work. This included lunches out, snacks and drinks, gas, bridge toll, and dry cleaning. We won’t even talk about the wardrobe, make up, and hair grooming expense.

You can start cutting back on all this now, in order to generate more ‘operating capital’ for your business. As well, since you will be having too much fun with your business start-up to waste time on entertainment, stop buying CD’s, DVD’s, movies, going out to dinner, going ‘window’ shopping. (few people buy windows, so just don’t go there!) Just buy the bare essentials, and you will be surprised how much money you can save for something of more value, YOUR freedom!

The day comes when you are ready to rock your world! You have reached your long-range goal. Look in the mirror and say ‘you are the only boss I will ever have again in this lifetime!’ Reward yourself with a big dinner with your favorite co-workers and friends, to announce and celebrate your liberation from the hamster wheel!

Do not spare yourself any praise! You want to look and feel as self-confident and victorious as possible, when you (drum roll) walk in, sit yourself down, and deliver your letter of resignation. Then get up, toss your hair, and with a big smile, say See Ya!

Is success only defined by having money and all of the luxuries that rich people have? Lots of people with the most money, have done nothing but be born in to the ‘right’ family. Does this mean they are a success? I don’t think so.

What does success mean to you? Does it mean doing something that you want to do and doing it well? I think this is closer to how I would define success. Success is achievement.

I believe that to feel successful, we have to be happy with what we are doing, and we have to achieve the dreams and goals that we have, whatever they are. Achieving something can produce a feeling of satisfaction and self esteem.

Even someone who only wants to bake a cake can feel enormously gratified just to see their finished creation. In some cases, this can mean as little as the fact that the cake did not burn, is not lopsided, and did not fall apart coming out of the pan. It doesn’t have to be featured in a gourmet magazine to give us this feeling of victory. Naturally, if the recipients of our creation, in this case our cake, enjoy it and appreciate our efforts, this is the grandest part of our success.Â

Another definition of success to me would be in our interactions with others. It can be as small as a smile that brightens another person’s day. Naturally, if that person had been lonely or feeling dejected, the pay back is even greater when you sense their gratitude. You probably didn’t put on your coat and say, today, I will succeed at making someone’s day better by being nice.

However, you know it when it happens, and it will really register, especially if you have ever been lonely and know what it feels like. This funny little thing we humans do, but not enough, is just turn up the corners of your mouth and mean it, whenever you cross paths with anyone! This gives you a nice little high for a minute. Without even trying very hard, you can feel and be a successful human being.

This is also important from a business standpoint. Be friendly and genuine. Of course, online we can’t smile in the usual way, but we can still add some sunshine to our communications. There is just something about being friendly and genuine that says so much more about us and our business than officious, cold communications-’To whom it may concern’. Feel the difference: “Dilbert, we received…” and “Hi, Dilbert, we received…”.

If we take a split second to say ‘hi’, or ‘how are you doing today?’ it speaks volumes about us being a person, and not a robot. This will break the ice in a way that can only benefit you, because right there you have established a commonality – and begun to build relationship — person to person!

The ability to set goals and effectively motivate yourself to achieve them are two essential skills that will help you achieve success in your home business.

To try and start a business without goals could be compared to throwing a baseball pitch, blindfolded in the dark. What would be your chance of getting your pitch on target? Never mind getting a strike-out. Unless you are very lucky it is unlikely that you will have any success without properly setting out goals.

If when you start your home business, in what ever field it maybe, if you have no goals and aim at nothing, is it not unlikely that you will hit nothing and achieve nothing?

To set effective goals there are a few things you need to know about yourself which will affect how you set your goals. You are affected by, the environment in which you live, your experience and knowledge, your attitude and dreams and visions for the future.

When you set your goals you need to decide what you want and when you want to achieve each goal. You should spend time writing down your goals and display them in a prominent position where you will see them daily to remind yourself to stay motivated and focused. Cross off your goals once they’ve been achieved, adding new ones to ensure your business keeps growing.

“Don’t set your Goals to low. If you don’t need much, you won’t become much”. – - Jim Rohn – -

I’m sure you will have come across the SMART analogy, with regards to goal setting. It contains the most important concepts to consider and adhere to when setting your goals.

Goals should be; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time related.

For example it would be unwise to set a goal of making $10,000 in a week, it’s just not a realistic goal for the average person, unless you have a lot of experience and knowledge in your field or receive help from someone who has these attributes. When you failed to reach this goal your motivation would suffer and you might start doubting your decision to start your home business.

Before you start setting your goals I want you to write a list of all the things you want; whether it is a new car, watch, house, to send your kids through college or a successful home business, write them all down and say why you want them. When I did this I had a list the length of my arm and I’m still working through it 3 years on. By doing this it will help focus your mind and motivate yourself to succeed.

Now set your goals, they need to be SMART and you need to set both short term and long term goals, and also daily goals. One of the best techniques I use is to set 6 goals before I go to bed for the next day and prioritise them so I know clearly in my mind what I have to do the next day.

All successful people set goals and prioritise them in order of importance. Remember your time is your most important asset; you simply cannot afford to waste it.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. — Aristotle -

When you are in business for yourself, you are the primary motivating factor, if your truly want your home business to succeed you will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

By making goal setting a habit there is no reason why you cannot achieve excellence.
