Goal Setting for a Successful Home Business

By: Ian Canaway

The ability to set goals and effectively motivate yourself to achieve them are two essential skills that will help you achieve success in your home business.

To try and start a business without goals could be compared to throwing a baseball pitch, blindfolded in the dark. What would be your chance of getting your pitch on target? Never mind getting a strike-out. Unless you are very lucky it is unlikely that you will have any success without properly setting out goals.

If when you start your home business, in what ever field it maybe, if you have no goals and aim at nothing, is it not unlikely that you will hit nothing and achieve nothing?

To set effective goals there are a few things you need to know about yourself which will affect how you set your goals. You are affected by, the environment in which you live, your experience and knowledge, your attitude and dreams and visions for the future.

When you set your goals you need to decide what you want and when you want to achieve each goal. You should spend time writing down your goals and display them in a prominent position where you will see them daily to remind yourself to stay motivated and focused. Cross off your goals once they’ve been achieved, adding new ones to ensure your business keeps growing.

“Don’t set your Goals to low. If you don’t need much, you won’t become much”. - - Jim Rohn - -

I’m sure you will have come across the SMART analogy, with regards to goal setting. It contains the most important concepts to consider and adhere to when setting your goals.

Goals should be; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time related.

For example it would be unwise to set a goal of making $10,000 in a week, it’s just not a realistic goal for the average person, unless you have a lot of experience and knowledge in your field or receive help from someone who has these attributes. When you failed to reach this goal your motivation would suffer and you might start doubting your decision to start your home business.

Before you start setting your goals I want you to write a list of all the things you want; whether it is a new car, watch, house, to send your kids through college or a successful home business, write them all down and say why you want them. When I did this I had a list the length of my arm and I’m still working through it 3 years on. By doing this it will help focus your mind and motivate yourself to succeed.

Now set your goals, they need to be SMART and you need to set both short term and long term goals, and also daily goals. One of the best techniques I use is to set 6 goals before I go to bed for the next day and prioritise them so I know clearly in my mind what I have to do the next day.

All successful people set goals and prioritise them in order of importance. Remember your time is your most important asset; you simply cannot afford to waste it.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. — Aristotle -

When you are in business for yourself, you are the primary motivating factor, if your truly want your home business to succeed you will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

By making goal setting a habit there is no reason why you cannot achieve excellence.

Legitimate ‘Work-at-Home’ Opportunity or Scam?

By Patricia Brucoli

The various schemes in the genre described below are rampant on the many job posting websites on the internet. So beware.

They are all something like this:

Work-at-Home and help someone in another country to do their accounts receivable and deposits from their American customers! A few hours a day, a trip to the bank, and get a percentage or fee for each transaction. Perfect part-time job from home, to augment your earnings while starting a home business, or to complement your portfolio of ‘work-at-home’ jobs? No way!

You process funds for the company ostensibly because of the amount of time it takes a non-US company to have US funds available. You being in the US and having a bank account can handle this much easier and faster for them!

So you are receiving payments from their clients, and then transferring the funds to your ‘employer’s’ bank. After all, money orders and cashier’s checks are ‘guaranteed’ according to banks. No one has access to your bank account, in many of these schemes, so where’s the risk?

If the funds transferred to you are no good, you will be liable - in the US, in spite of the fact that banks will say money orders and cashiers checks are “guaranteed”, 2 weeks later, when they finally figure out it is a forgery. You have already transferred the money out and now YOU are liable to cover the funds. YOU can also face criminal fraud charges.

As if this isn’t bad enough, another dimension to these types of scams is that if you accept packages to reship - the merchandise turns out to have been purchased with a phony credit card - YOU are liable to the merchant who got burned and YOU can go to jail for receiving stolen merchandise - in the US, not to mention using the postal service to do it (when you ‘forward’ it to their customers).

It can keep getting worse - you may end up getting your identity stolen - some  applications seem innocuous, in that they only ask for your birthday, street address, etc. - but sometimes if you are in the US, they will, as your ‘employer’ say they are required to have your ’social security number’ for tax purposes -

Your social security number can be used to open credit cards in your name, etc.; YOU will be liable for the charges, and your credit may be ruined - incredibly, it can be very difficult to prove you are you and it can take years…

Always be cautious when having business dealings with people in any other country. Only because it can be difficult to impossible to pursue them to get your money back or to prosecute them.

Have a frequent credit check done or invest in a credit monitoring service to be on top of it in case someone opens an account in your name, or you see charges that you did not incur.

Go to LooksTooGoodToBeTrue.com and then to ‘types of fraud’/'job scams’, to read the US take on this from our Federal Trade Commission. This is another address for the Internet Fraud Complaint Unit of the FBI. Check it out - it also has the descriptons of other types of fraud you will encounter on the internet.

Keeps getting worse in my mind, where you could even  be laundering money for a terrorist organization and not know it…

Do You Have What it Takes to Be An Internet Entrepreneur?

Copyright © Stone Evans, The Home Biz Guy
Author of “Dotcomology - The Science of Making Money Online”

These days, it seems like everyone wants to work from home and make money on the Internet. But before you even turn on your computer, the first question you have to ask yourself is whether you’re cut out for this kind of work.

The fact is, building a home-based business isn’t for everyone. Some people like the commute. They really do enjoy having a boss who tells them what  to do, and they like the routine of working nine-to-five for an ordinary salary that can barely pay the mortgage. Personally, I think they’re nuts.

More reasonably, there are people who are concerned about the risk of starting up their own business. They’re not sure it’s worth the investment of time and money, and they’re scared of the responsibility that comes with running their own company. They wonder if there is another way to escape the rat race.

I’m sure there is. You could win the lottery or wait for your Aunt Sue to keel over and leave you her condo. Or maybe you could sit down with a pen and paper and draw the blueprint for “The Next Big Thing”. Anything can happen… Right?

For me, what happened was creating a successful, self-running Internet marketing system. It didn’t happen without effort. It didn’t happen without at least some initial investment of both time and money and, of course, it doesn’t happen now without me making sure that the taxes are filed and the paperwork is done. But it happened.

I’m my own boss. I work from home according to my own schedule and I get to pocket all the cash my business makes. If you’re prepared to give an e-business the time, the work and the money it needs to get started and get growing, it can happen for you too.

Getting a Solid Internet Marketing Foundation

By: Willie Crawford

As we look at building our online businesses, many of us acknowledge, early-on, that we don’t know it all. Those who don’t, are almost certain to fail because they often attempt to apply techniques that simply don’t work online - to their online businesses. The quickest way to online success is to model those who are already successful at what you want to do. It’ s that simple.

Of all of the chores involved in building your business, marketing is usually the most critical. Poor marketing is also the reason so many businesses fail. You need to learn to properly market your business or hire someone else to do it for you. I’ll give you a few recommended resources to help jumpstart your education in a minute.

A second extremely important skill that goes hand-in-hand with marketing is generating publicity. You can have the greatest product in the world, but if no one knows about it, it may as well not exist. If no one knows about you, then you won’t make any sales! Let’s look at generating publicity first…

Publicity can take many forms, and they often overlaps what many would define as marketing. For today, I want you to focus on the most effective, and often cheapest, publicity. In fact, this great publicity is often free. What we’re talking about here is publicity generated by getting the media and others talking about you and your business. We’re talking about the publicity typically generated through tools such as press releases and doing media interviews.

Why is the above type of publicity so powerful? It’s so powerful because people believe what others say about you MORE than they believe what you say about yourself. So when you can get magazines, newspapers, television and radio personalities, and even online ezines talking about you, those hearing this buzz believe it more and are therefore more likely to go check you out.

A second reason this type of publicity is so powerful is because you can literally generate millions of dollars in free publicity if you know what you are doing. You may not be able to afford a full-page ad in a major magazine or newspaper. However, let the right person know about your story and that same publication will be all to happy to tell the world about you… and give them your website url and/or your toll-free phone number.

Learning to get media attention is not hard. To make it even easier, I’ve arranged for my friend, Annie Jennings, who runs a top PR agency, to help you a little. Her site is at:
http://www.anniejenningspr.com/teleseminars.htm I gave you the above url because it is the page where she tells you of upcoming teleseminars she’s hosting on various promotion and sales-related topics. These teleseminars are all free.

While at Annie’s site, sign up for other goodies she offers including courses in generating press releases, creating a platform, getting on top radio shows, etc. She’ll give you all types of freebies like audiotapes and coffee cups. When I first met her, and she sent me an intro package, it felt like Christmas :-)

So we’ll let Annie turn you into a “media darling.” Then you can focus on learning marketing. This is where most online business people should probably spend 80% of their time - not on all of the busywork that you can get someone else to do. The highest and best use of your time is probably in marketing your business, not making webpage updates, writing or even creating products. You can get freelancers to do this for you very inexpensively at places like Elance.com

Marketing is nothing more than communicating the benefits of your products or services effectively to your ideal customer. It all hinges upon effective communications, and your communications can be greatly improved if you understand how and why we interact the way we do with each other. To get a firm grasp on that topic I recommend that you read the book, “Influence, The Psychology of Persuassion,” by Dr. Robert Cialdini. You’ll never be the same after you’ve read and digest this book. If you’re like me you’ll find yourself reading it over and over! You can find this book at online bookstores.

Another solid book on marketing is Jay Abraham’s “Mr. X” book. This 376 page book distills several decades of the marketing know-how of Jay Abraham. The full title of the book is “Money-Making Secrets of Marketing Genius Jay Abraham And Other Marketing Wizards - A No-Nonsense Guide To Great Wealth and a Personal Fortune.” This book is so good that you could devote six month just to studying the one book, and you’d understand more about marketing than 95% of your competitors.

This book is marketed by the Abraham Marketing Group, but Internet marketers working with the group run specials from time to time. Just watch your email for one of these specials. A course that I recommend that isn’t just on marketing but on developing the proper mindset is by Dr. Robert Anthony. It’s called “Know How To Be Rich.” In order to run a really successful business, you need to properly train your mind. Many people actually need to give themselves permission to be successful. Dr. Anthony’s course was a big “A-ha” for me and many of my clients. You can find it at: http://theinternetlifestyle.com/

You’ll notice that none of the resources just recommended were specifically Internet-marketing-only resources. That’s because internet marketing is just an offshoot of marketing, and most of the principles are the same. Most Internet marketers who are struggling, don’t have a good grasp of the over-riding basic marketing principles. That’s what the above resources will provide.

Two Internet marketing resources I will recommend are a private membership site I’ve set up, and a course on how to generate website traffic. You can find my site at: http://TheRealSecrets.com The webpage does a great job of explaining why you need to be a member :-)

Without website traffic, your website basically has the same results as a billboard on a highway that no one travels. It produces no results because no one sees it. So you do need to learn how to generate traffic. For that I recommend the very indepth, crash course offered by John Reese’s Traffic Secrets. I’ve personally gone through the 13 CD’s and DVD ROM’s, and 3 manuals - TWICE. You can check out this course at: http://TrafficSecretsByJohnReese.com It’s a little expensive, but well worth it if you USE what he teaches. If you aren’t going to use it, then you should save your money.

If you work your way through the above resources you’ll be well on your way to building a massively successful online business. None of these resources are something you give a quick glance and then the magic happens. They all require effort. Put in the effort now and you’ll have a very solid foundation upon which to build your Internet marketing business. By understand basic marketing, and then how the internet differs, you’ll possess some very powerful, rarely mastered knowledge.

Confessions of an Internet Marketing Expert

By Willie Crawford

Do you really believe that there are people making VERY comfortable livings selling stuff over the Internet? Or do you believe that they’re just a bunch of fakes who’ll tell you ANYTHING just to get your money?

Like many of you, when I first came online I believed that it WAS possible. Then, meeting with marginal success for a while… as I marketed many different products, I began to doubt. It was during this time that I watched many friends who’ve come online at the same time that I did, simply give up and go back to their regular jobs. I never seriously considered doing that despite my wife’s “suggestions.”

Eventually, I was exposed to those actually doing what I dreamed of doing. I met them at conference and workshops. I talked to them on networking calls and teleseminars. Slowly, I began to believe again. I saw people offering irrefutable proof that they were really making the big bucks. Like many people, I reasoned that if they could do it then so could I.

When I say big bucks, I mean over $200,000 a year. To someone from my background that is a significant annual income. My annual goals are now seven-figure, but I still keep grounded and acknowledge that a six-figure income is above average. So it’s the six figure income that I sought the secret to earning.

Then, one day, I woke up and it was happening to me. At that point, I asked myself, “How did it happen?” I actually sat in bewilderment as I asked, What happened?” I needed that answer because I wanted to show others.

Here was my biggest challenge! Every week I was approached by people with very big dreams. They wanted to build a business on the internet to supplement their incomes or maybe even completely quit their day jobs. Long after I was able to leave my day job and earn a full-time living on the internet, I really couldn’t explain to others WHY they couldn’t do it too. I knew what I was doing and what was working for me, but there seemed to be a missing piece of the puzzle.

I needed that missing piece of the puzzle because by this time I had become a trusted advisor and role model to many. I viewed their trust in me as almost sacred and I desperately didn’t want to mislead them. What a tremendous burden!

I knew that the answer had to be in something that I had done. It had to be in something that my role models and mentors had done.

As the pressures of desperately needing to make money just to pay the bills lifted, this allow me to view things from a more detached view. What I began to see and understand was mind-boggling.

The first thing that became apparent was… what all of the experts had been telling me was actually THE WAY. The problem was that I couldn’t hear what they were saying over all the noise in my head… the noise born of desperation to find a way to earn a living online… that struggle to succeed that so many do experience.

When that noise quieted down, I could see that first of all there are only a handful of “Internet marketing experts” making the big bucks online in “Internet marketing.” Many of these are actually making most of their money in niche markets. Many of them are also making much of their money in the offline world… often in mail order.

This is what they were telling me from the very beginning though. However, for some reason, I couldn’t hear what they were saying. I could not hear their message. It was like I was deeply submerged under water and could barely see or hear them just above the water’s surface. What were they yelling? “Find a niche and fill it!” Some even taught, “Find a niche and totally dominate it, ethically exploiting it in every way possible.”

Recently, I found these teachings reinforced even more. One of my friends shared a manuscript with me that told the stories of people earning from $100,000 to $18 million per year… all selling very niche products over the internet. One of these was an affiliate marketer, but he was targeting very specific niches.

My friend had actually tracked down and interviewed over 60 people who were making the big bucks. He had asked each of them over 75 probing questions to get at the very essence of what they did and why it worked for them. As I read the answers to the interviews he conducted, they firmly confirmed all that I’d slowly learned over the past 7 years. They confirmed that all of the things the experts had been teaching me were true.

Had I gone full circle? I now believed the possibilities were as limitless as I perceived them to be when I first came online. When I first came online I saw the possibilities of earning a living on the Internet as totally limitless. I even named a site and an ezine “Limitless.” Now you know the rest of that story :-)

Internet Marketing (marketing products and services over the Internet) is truly the greatest opportunity that most of us have available to us. The barriers to entry into your own business are so low. The only element really missing for many is the how-to.

My friend compiled his interviews into an ebook which he called Success Alert - Conversation With Successful Internet Entrepreneurs. This ebook is actually just 9 of the best interviews that he conducted. That fills a 281 page ebook. I encourage you to check out this ebook at: http://www.profitautomation.com/app/adtrack.asp?AdID=79505

I’ve just shared with you a cycle that I think many internet marketers go through as they gradually figure out the puzzle. The baffling part is how difficult it can be to see what people are telling you. We seek answers and are given them, yet we often don’t hear them.

Yours in service and gratitude.

Internet Marketing - The Two Faces of ‘Free’

By Paul White

‘FREE’ is the reason people are successful, and make a fortune marketing on the internet, yet ‘FREE’ is also the reason 90% of people fail miserably!

It is all to do with your approach to your business and your careful use of ‘FREE’ things. You will never make any money placing your own ads on other people’s FREE classified sites and/or FFA links, even if you have submission software.

And you will never make money with just a FREE self replicating website. This is the point when most people give up. But you must realise that you will never become rich for FREE.

You must invest initially in a professionally designed webpage/site and place links to your programs. You will then be able to promote your own unique website, and people can click on your programs once they visit you, and see everything you are offering.

Mix up the programs you are promoting on your website. Some can be FREE, but others should have cost you something to start up. If you introduce a thousand people for example, and all of you just get a FREE self replicating website, then no one makes any money!

Once you have a good professional looking website set up, and you have a reasonable advertising budget to work with, which you know you can comfortably afford to spend each week, then you are ready to exploit the other side of FREE!

It is your customers, and potential customers, who need to be given FREE things. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that customers are sitting at their computer screens, with their mouse in one hand and their credit cards in the other, surfing the net to spend their hard earned cash on anything or everything they see.

You have to earn your customers respect to get money from them, and the best way to earn respect from a customer is to give them something for FREE.

To get them to sign up for your newsletter or ezine then offer them lots of FREEBIES. There are now so many ezines around that they need to have a reason to subscribe to yours.

And keep them subscribing! I offer new daily FREE software and FREE E-books to all my own subscribers. Even more important is to offer FREE things on your website to get your visitors there in the first place.

Placing an ad that reads ‘Buy this amazing widget at my site…’ will attract just a fraction of the visitors that an ad reading, ‘View details of this amazing widget and get FREE entry into our $25,000 weekly drawing, FREE software, FREE ebooks and FREE grocery vouchers worth hundreds of dollars!….’

Yet all of these Freebies, and thousands more can be found quite easily by yourself by surfing all of the FREE sites, and collecting what you think will be suitable for your own visitors.(Just type in the word ‘FREE’ into any search engine for a huge list of sites.)

Also visit lotto and competition sites for suitable FREE games you can include on your site. Also offer even more Freebies as an incentive for your customers to buy products from you. For example, ‘Buy this widget from me by midnight tonight and I will also give you 10 FREE adverts in our ezine.’

And apart from giving away FREE ads in your ezine, also have a FREE classified ads section on your own website where people can place their ads. Again you will find them flocking to your site to do this.

So there you have the two faces of FREE, one is ugly and one is beautiful! To ensure success just make sure that you know which face is which!

At Last, A Plain English Guide to Internet Marketing

by: Gordon Goodfellow

Have you ever been horrified and intimidated at the convoluted, jargon-reliant information about Internet marketing available on the Net?

Often it results in many companies becoming confused and therefore reluctant to put into practice what would be a valuable and simple business resource when understood and applied correctly.

Market Research consultant for Inteltab, Gordon Goodfellow, who is also an English literature graduate, decided it was time for a change. Part of this desire to make Internet marketing more accessible may be due to his past experience as a teacher. “I was sick of all the gobbledegook that surrounds the Internet, even today,” he explains.

“Marketing on the Net isn’t rocket science and should not be presented as such. Everyone should have access to it. That’s the beauty of it.”

Having spent four years researching and assessing the best way of getting an effective message across on the Internet, he began to design a basic introduction to Internet marketing. The result of this hard work is Applied Web Marketing. AWM is a comprehensive beginner’s guide to marketing on the Internet, covering everything from domain names to e-commerce and merchant accounts, and written in plain English. This is designed for the small business user and the home business user who does not want to spend a fortune on outside “experts”.

The key to most of Internet marketing is search engine optimisation. The key to good search engine optimisation is keyword research. In other words, knowing which keywords or search terms people are using to find what they’re looking for on the Internet.

If keyword research is done properly then there is no doubt that you will get highly targeted visitors to your website. This is obviously the professional way of going about things. It is the antithesis to the “spam” approach (unsolicited commercial emails) which achieves extremely poor results and simply annoys anyone unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end.

But which search engine should you optimise for? The search engine of choice at the moment is Google. There are two good reasons for this. Firstly, Google is the most popular search engine on the Internet today. It is known for the quality and relevance of its search results, and so people trust it. Secondly, over the last couple of years Google has joined alliances with other search engines and directories. AOL and Netscape share Google’s search findings, so you’ll have similar search results on the AOL and Netscape databases. Other lesser databases also rely on Google, so that if you are well represented on Google, then you’ll be well represented on over sixty per cent of Internet search facilities.

Yahoo, the world’s most popular directory, has since launched its own search engine, which makes it now a main competitor to Google (in the past Yahoo took its own results from Google’s database). You can still submit your site to Yahoo for free, but expect a listing to take several weeks. For a more immediate effect you may wish to explore Yahoo’s alliance with Pay Per Click engine Overture.

Microsoft is also said to be developing its own search engine as part of its MSN sphere of influence. Expect this to be a major player as well.

You should also obtain a listing on the Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org) which is not much known about but very well respected in the search engine optimisation industry. The Open Directory does not use the normal search engine “spiders” or robot searchers; instead it uses over thirty thousand volunteer human editors who are ostensibly experts in their own fields. The theory behind this is that it ensures relevancy, accuracy and quality of all listings. A listing in DMOZ will therefore ensure a listing on Google and probably earn you an enhanced ranking there. Then all the others, like Yahoo, AOL, Netscape, MSN and the rest are bound to follow.

Optimisation is everything. The Applied Web Marketing website itself has the number one position on Google out of 1.47 million search results for the search term “applied web marketing”.

After optimisation is the submission process. Perceived wisdom of the moment says it is best to submit manually. Manual submissions to dozens of search engines and directories can be very time-consuming, however. There are some good automated and semi-automated software packages available out there to do the submissions for you. But for the major players do find the time for manual submissions. Some search engines, for example Alta Vista, make it impossible for automated submission by software programs, because of individualised text codes that must be entered by hand at the start of the submission process, so you have to submit to Alta Vista manually as well. But that just takes about three minutes.

Don’t bother with ads that say that they can “blast your web site to 500,000 search engines”. There aren’t that many search engines; there’s only a few hundred in total, and only about a dozen of any major importance. You’ll just pay your money and be very disappointed. Most of these so-called search engines are link farms, FFA or free-for-all sites, which nobody every looks at, and which are responsible chiefly for sending out spam. If you link to such web sites you risk being penalised by the bona fide search engines.

The next thing to have lots of is patience. A listing on Google should probably appear within a couple of weeks if you have optimized your pages properly. Incidentally, if you have multiple pages on your web site, as is mostly the case, it is important only to submit the index or home page, and let Google’s spider “Googlebot” to find and index the other pages itself using the links that you should have set up on your site.

The Applied Web Marketing guide has useful links to many resources, lots of them completely free, and to the submission pages of the major search engines and directories, making it a perfect site to begin your journey into the world of Internet marketing.
