How to Be a Success Right Now

Copyright © Patricia Brucoli

Is success only defined by having money and all of the luxuries that rich people have? Lots of people with the most money, have done nothing but be born in to the ‘right’ family. Does this mean they are a success?  I don’t think so.

What does success mean to you? Does it mean doing something that you want to do and doing it well? I think this is closer to how I would define success. Success is achievement.

I believe that to feel successful, we have to be happy with what we are doing, and we have to achieve the dreams and goals that we have, whatever they are. Achieving something can produce a feeling of satisfaction and self esteem.

Even someone who only wants to bake a cake can feel enormously gratified just to see their finished creation. In some cases, this can mean as little as the fact that the cake did not burn, is not lopsided, and did not fall apart coming out of the pan. It doesn’t have to be featured in a gourmet magazine to give us this feeling of victory.  Naturally, if the recipients of our creation, in this case our cake, enjoy it and appreciate our efforts, this is the grandest part of our success.

Another definition of success to me would be in our interactions with others. It can be as small as a smile that brightens another person’s day. Naturally, if that person had been lonely or feeling dejected, the pay back is even greater when you sense their gratitude.  You probably didn’t put on your coat and say, today, I will succeed at making someone’s day better by being nice.

However, you know it when it happens, and it will really register, especially if you have ever been lonely and know what it feels like.  This funny little thing we humans do, but not enough, is just turn up the corners of your mouth and mean it, whenever you cross paths with anyone! This gives you a nice little high for a minute. Without even trying very hard, you can feel and be a successful human being.

This is also important from a business standpoint. Be friendly and genuine. Of course, online we can’t smile in the usual way, but we can still add some sunshine to our communications.  There is just something about being friendly and genuine that says so much more about us and our business than officious, cold communications-’To whom it may concern’. Feel the difference: “Dilbert, we received…” and “Hi, Dilbert, we received…”.

If we take a split second to say ‘hi’, or ‘how are you doing today?’ it speaks volumes about us being a person, and not a robot. This will break the ice in a way that can only benefit you, because right there you have established a commonality - and begun to build relationship — person to person!

Tech Speak & Acronyms Made Easy

By Patricia Brucoli

If you are new to Internet Marketing (IM), or learning any new application, for that matter, it is of great advantage to invest some time and start a list of acronyms and other mysteries of the ‘English’ language. Then find out what they mean and update and sort that list alphabetically, so you can refer to it.

This is no exercise in futility such as is the case if you are trying to understand a process and keep glossing over those words that don’t mean anything to you yet. It would be so much easier to retain if you knew what each element referred to.  There are far too many seemingly unrelated phrases and acronyms to be able to memorize them all, or to be able to fully comprehend what you are reading when half the words are ‘Greek’ to you.

Information is power. You will feel very powerful when you get done with most of the concepts and theories related to internet marketing, any technical operation, etc.. Anytime we overcome an obstacle, it is very gratifying, in that we are conquering new territory.

There is nothing that produces more anxiety than trying to work yourself through a learning curve with only half the information. Believe me, once you make your list, you will feel empowered and realize it is really much easier understanding concepts that can be readily identified by having more than initials.

One place you can look up some of these words and acronyms is wikipedia. It is a free online encyclopedia that is a great source of information.  http://wikipedia.com .  Of course, your search box is another at the ready ‘encyclopedia’ - I am often surprised that it seems to be able to find just about anything in the world.

There are speed reading theories that teach to browse the material first to get an overview. Then go back and really concentrate on what you are reading.  It is at the overview stage where you could begin compiling your list. Make a quick pass to find out the meanings of the mysterious words and initials you encounter. Then jot it down and go to the reading every word with serious, concentration step.  Refer to your list whenever you need to.

This practice really helps when starting  a new job, as well. It sounds time consuming, but it is well worth the time. Hello, are you retaining the training? I hardly think so as each industry has their own set of acronyms and terminology.  Try to follow along with the person conducting your orientation - they like people who take notes as this is an indication of interest and the desire to learn thoroughly, and hence to have the ability to be effective in their capacity.

Hopefully you won’t get anyone like some I have had, who expect you to already know everything by osmosis, or who purposely use confusing ‘in’ jargon, and then when you look perplexed, give you one of those reassuring ‘you’ll never make it’ expressions.

So, in closing, WYSIWYG, IMHO. (What You See is What You Get, In My Humble Opinion) ;o)

Internet Marketing Bizop & Tool Addiction

Copyright By © Patricia Brucoli

One of the most interesting phenomenon I have experienced as an Internet Marketer, is business opportunity addiction and Internet marketing tool obsession.

We are Opportunity Junkies. I have experienced this first-hand, as well as  witnessed otherwise perfectly sane people becoming compulsively obsessed with the ‘kid in a candy store’ mentality. Born to Shop!

It’s like the excitement becomes the addiction! Every time you speak to them, it goes like this: ‘Hi, how are you doing today’? ‘Oh, just GREAT, I just joined XYZ.com’, ABC.com, and QRS.net, wow, I‘m stoked.’  ‘Oh’.

I have been rehabilitated and now tease a few of my friends about this and even subtly scold them, of course, followed by giggles or written LOL’s, so they don’t think I have over-stepped the line on what a friend may say.

I am so happy I have learned to articulate exactly how this problem manifests, as well as the repercussions, so that I can attempt to do an intervention, before they are hopelessly lost like I was.  (If you wanted to kill me in my weakened state, you would just have needed to start explaining one of those 3×9 forced matrices here, and if you were particularly cruel, you would include a graphic representation).

I know how it started with me.  Somehow I got the phrase ‘diversify’ in my head, and that was what I thought I was doing. The rationalization was I would find out which one works. If I tried enough things, at least one had to work.

I will have one of these, one of the blue ones, and a couple of the red ones.  Now I know these are called Niches.  Wow, only two months in this business and I was a real empire builder.  Domains! Yes I shall be master of all my domains!  Cyber Monopoly! Woo-Hoo!

Multiple streams of income - there’s an alluring, addictive phrase.  There are many other tempting  nouns and verbs that are a part of this wonderful world of Internet Marketing! For instance, ‘Massive action’! Yes! Make my day!   Well, I did need more than ‘work at home in your pajamas’ - somehow that was not very exciting to me.

How about ‘blaster’ - now here is where we are getting into dangerous territory for sure, and this one can easily translate to ‘spammer’. You can see where I am going with this one, maybe the sandbox, maybe even jail!  Beware of anything with ‘blaster’ in the name.

What are the dangers of this harmless flirtation?  Aside from the hundreds of dollars I wasted on memberships in all these dissociated programs, and tools that I never had time to follow through on (use), there are the reams of paper I wasted printing out every screen, every detail about each opportunity;  followed by the eye-strain and a condition well-known as ‘information overload’.

Diagnosis:  LOSS OF FOCUS!  One must return to a logical state somehow.  I was so overwhelmed after my first 6 months, that I just had to ‘step back’.  It took a long time of just going around thinking, ‘what do I do next’, ‘where do I start’.  I am not exaggerating here.

It took me a couple months of doing almost NOTHING, but I did know I was committed to this dream of having my own business on the Internet, and that is the only reason I didn’t just throw everything away and get another dead-end day job!

My return to sanity:  I found a program that had everything all put together for me - a very affordable, free website, including legitimate, proven affiliate programs, training in marketing strategy, tools and resources, sales copy, and a support forum.

The latter has especially been a Godsend, in that working at home alone navigating a brave new world, it sure is good to know I am not alone. The cost was unbelievably low.  No bait and switch, either, it is still the same after 2 years. This would give me the cohesive foundation to build on, one brick at a time.

I had to promise myself, if I spent another dime or joined one more program, I would have to quit a corresponding number of things in order to generate the money it would cost.  So I weeded out all the expensive things that hadn’t worked, that had lousy instructions, lousy support, or that were too technical, etc.

Recovery: As I became more and more ‘recovered’, I still held on to a few pet IM tools that would surely help in my new venture.  Slowly I have let them go too, but it was hard.  I had withdrawal symptoms = ‘you have already spent this money over the past several months, are you just going to chuck it all’?

Then the saying ‘throwing good money after bad’ came to me, and I said ‘cut your losses already; WHY keep doing something that hasn’t worked’?  I feel another saying coming on, ‘Definition of a crazy person: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results’.

Half-Way House: This is not to say that once firmly established I could not begin to add on more Niches to my portfolio of websites. (I had secretly hidden 5 more domain names in a half-way house) and do have plans for my network of companies that I have begun to build on slowly.  However, my MAIN FOCUS is the one core program which will be the prototype for developing my other businesses in the future.

Spam & the Law

By Chonticha Marijne

10 Things You Can Do to Stay Out of Trouble

Are you going global in your home based business? Opportunity knocked and you responded, but now you’re wondering about some new problems rearing their potentially ugly heads. Take spam laws, for instance. You have legitimate intentions, but how do you remain legal and legit?

Everybody hates spam. You really don’t want your hosting service provider to discontinue your website because they received spamming complaints, much less get into trouble with the trade commissions. But the structure of your business requires you to rely on a certain percentage of “hits” in response to your emails. What to do to stay in touch… all over the world?

In Europe and the UK, an EU “opt-in” directive is now in place and being upheld for international Internet marketers. Those who send commercial emails and mobile SMS messages without permission can now be fined thousands of dollars.

Countering the EU antispam legislation is the “CAN-SPAM Act,” passed in the United States in 2003. In case you’re wondering, the anagram stands for Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003. Known as the “opt-out” directive, this little number allows virtual spamming by placing the responsibility on the recipient to opt-out by replying to unsolicited commercial emails with a message to unsubscribe.

Yes, you read that right. Spamming is by no means illegal, provided you play by the rules. But the advice is to watch it, especially if you are in the business of global marketing via the Internet. Theoretically, U.S. citizens who break EU and UK antispam laws may be extradited, heavily fined and tried. And the possible prison penalties that came in the wake of the new Act in the U.S. aren’t anything to thumb your nose at either.

Take heed, global marketers, the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 is only the prelude. You don’t have to be an expert to predict that regulation for unsolicited email will continue to grow in future. So you should build your opt-in lists while you can, and as fast as possible, but do see it as your duty to use your lists responsibly, as your trusting subscribers so rightly deserve.

Now let’s take a look at what you, a legitimate non-spamming Internet marketer, can do to stay out of trouble as you continue to grow your mailing list:

  1. Use only email addresses that you obtained legitimately
  2. Consider using double opt-in lists.
  3. If you want to play it completely safe, avoid purchasing leads altogether.
  4. Keep any records that you have of your opt-in subscribers as proof (name, email address, IP address, date & time stamp etc.).
  5. Never use anonymous remailers.
  6. Clearly label your email as being a commercial message that “may contain advertising or solicitation”.
  7. Never use misleading subject lines.
  8. Always provide a real reply-to email address.
  9. Always provide a postal address (a PO Box is always a good idea - you really don’t want to go public with your home address).
  10. Always provide a working unsubscribe option.

This is by no means legal advice or intended as such — only your personal lawyer can provide you with that. Take notice of the above tips, think before you press “Send” and you will have a good chance of being left alone to do your thing by the spam police.

May you continue to have a smooth ride on the information superhighway and may your journey be a safe, enjoyable and fruitful one!

Online Residual Income

Copyright © Patricia Brucoli

Affiliate marketing is such an ingenious concept, really. It is very advantageous for both the affiliate and the affiliate program. To those just starting out with their dream to have their own business, but no real talent or creativity yet, it is the perfect ‘foot in the door’.

What is an affiliate program? An affiliate program is a company that has a product and/or service to sell. They offer to let affiliates join the program and provide them with their own identification or member number, give them personalized marketing tools, such as a website, ’splash page’, banners, and sales copy, etc.

The affiliate is not an employee, but is a private contractor in a sense.  As such, they are not paid a salary and are responsible for the cost of their advertising efforts done on behalf of the program.  If the affiliate makes a sale, they are given a percentage as a commission.

The affiliate program provides front-end sales and customer support, payment processor, inventory, order fulfillment, shipping and handling and back-end customer support, (refunds, etc.). What they get in exchange for allowing the affiliate to offer the company’s product and paying them a commission, is that they are gaining greater exposure - free advertising and marketing which is paid for by the affiliate.

In addition to the affiliate having a product to sell and receiving a commission, the affiliate is also usually eligible to receive commissions for referrals of other affiliates to the program.  They would make sometimes an up-front bonus and/or monthly residual income from this referral, as well as second-tier commissions when their referral makes sales or referrals.

Sometimes this arrangement is referred to as multi-level marketing, for obvious reasons.  Most legitimate companies that are sales related have this same type of structure. This is a win-win situation for all concerned.

This residual income is different from a one-time sale of the product or service itself.  The residual income concept is particularly conducive to ‘building’ a business, in that you can continue to derive income from work that you do once.

Of course as with anything, there will be recidivism, so this doesn’t mean you can ever rest on your laurels.  You must continue to take consistent action in order to maintain whatever level of income you require.

Then with this little internet residual income machine running, you can possibly then reach a level of creativity and produce your own product - and maybe even your own affiliate program!

e-Beware

By Josh Anderson

I notice a lot of fairly new “would be” internet business owners posting questions in various internet marketing forums about things like “randomizers,” “investments,” and other scams.

These “newbies” are looking at these programs and their offerings with serious interest and feeling the temptation that comes when promised easy money.

I am going to be strait forward and completely honest:

1. When you are getting started online it is hard to hear the legit opportunities because of the multitude of scams and ponzi schemes.

2. Opportunities that offer you fast money by making an “investment” into a “matrix” or “randomizer” or other such Ponzi scheme are almost all illegal.

3. There are so many illegal schemes online that it may seem like very few are exposed and prosecuted by the authorities but this does not make them any more legit.

4. In the US 70% of your revenues must come from the direct sale of goods or services and only 30% can come from the recruitment of other distributors in order for the opportunity to be legal.

This is known as the 70/30 rule and is used by the feds when taking on mlm and other opportunities.

Otherwise the companies are getting into “ponzi” and “chain” schemes which are federal offenses in the US.

5. “Referral sales” are illegal in all 50 states. A referral sale is where you offer a discount or other value in exchange for “leads” or the names of prospective purchasers (do a search for legal info regarding “referral sales” on Google and you will learn some very interesting facts).

Here is a link to a page with some basic legal definitions for ponzi or pyramid schemes and referral sales:

http://ag.ky.gov/cp/367_830.htm6. A program does not have to pay out in the form of a “pyramid” to qualify as Ponzi.6. A program does not have to pay out in the form of a “pyramid” to qualify as Ponzi.7. Just because their is a product or service offered as a front does not mean that a program is not Ponzi. Here is a good example:6. A program does not have to pay out in the form of a “pyramid” to qualify as Ponzi.7. Just because their is a product or service offered as a front does not mean that a program is not Ponzi. Here is a good example:http://www.crimes-of-persuasion.com/Crimes/InPerson/MajorPerson/telecom2000.htm

6. A program does not have to pay out in the form of a “pyramid” to qualify as Ponzi.7. Just because their is a product or service offered as a front does not mean that a program is not Ponzi. Here is a good example:8. There are many involved in ponzi who will claim that their program “works” and has passed the scrutiny of the FTC… most of them have no clue what they are talking about and are simply subconsciously excusing a lie that they have convinced themselves to ignore.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/doznalrt.htm

9. Self deception is a destructive illness. I got on the internet for the first time in 2001 and began researching internet business. I was stuck by the amount of “investment” and “matrix” opportunities that were available. Many of them were “ground floor” startup opportunities that claimed they were going to sell a product or service once they got off the ground but that they needed a few “investors” to grab “top positions” before they “launched.”

I found that almost all of them never actually offered a legit product or service and operated as an unabashed and obvious pyramid scheme. Most sites would disappear within a year and I would see the same founders starting different opportunities with varying “payout” plans all of them Ponzi.

I also saw that some of these Ponzi creators spent time posing as “consumer advocates” for those who had lost money in other schemes. These ponzi scammers would lure in victims of other failed ponzi schemes by publishing submitted complaints on their websites in behalf of the victims. They would act as if they were trying to assist the victims in recovering their lost “investments.”

I would then see these very same “advocates,” after building a list of victims sufficiently large enough who trusted them, launch their own ponzi schemes with claims like “everyone gets paid” and “guaranteed not to fail.” They would tout themselves as saviors claiming that no one would get hurt and that they were out to help everyone who lost money when other companies failed.

10. A majority… let me say that again a MAJORITY of opportunities I see advertised in safelists are illegal investment schemes.

The reason for this is because most people who are attracted to these type of opportunities cannot build a mailing list to market to (the reason is because the mainstream business world immediately sees you as illegit) and they congregate in safe lists in hopes of spreading their opportunity virally.

Most members of safe list communities (the one’s who spend every day reading and mailing safelists and investing in ponzi) are inexperienced deceived and looking for easy money.

*I know I will get heat for saying that but I also know it is true. There are legit ways to use safe lists but the majority of the opportunities advertised in them are complete garbage.*

11. Light attracts light. Darkness attracts darkness. Scammers attract easy money seekers who have deceived them selves into believing their lies.

12. There are many members of marketing forums making money in illegal investment and ponzi schemes. There are many members of marketing forums loosing money in illegal investment and ponzi schemes.

13. If you align your self with such opportunities (even if you make money) your business will be seen as illegit and your own reputation will be tarnished by those whom you associate with.

14. It is illegal to offer an investment opportunity, collect funds, and then spend the money on other projects:

Read the Matthew Bowin example on this page:

http://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/cyberfraud.htm

Not to long ago dozens of members of a popular internet marketing fourm were lured into investing in a software development opportunity run by a well known marketer that was never fully delivered.

I settled out of court with that marketer to regain my own investment back after I threatened to bring in the FBI and SEC.

15. It pays to educate your self on the laws that govern your business. I have personally interviewed attorneys, legal experts, authors, and a federal expert witnesse on the subject of mlm, one up referral, and ponzi style compensation programs during my own investigation into the online “money for nothing” phenomenon.

http://www.firstgov.gov/Citizen/Topics/Internet_Fraud.shtml

16. You should also read what the SEC has to say about “internet investment” schemes.

It may shock you to know that:

“…the following companies must file reports with the SEC: All U.S. companies with more than 500 investors and $10 million in net assets;”

Companies that fail to do that are in violation of federal laws and many cases send the owners of such companies to prison.

The SEC governs most “investment” opportunities and when their hammer falls on a company it is not pretty.

Anyone interested in online business opportunities should read this page about “internet investment fraud:”

http://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/cyberfraud.htm

Also it may surprise you how many internet businesses violate these areas of the law:

Franchising - http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/franchise/netrule.htm

Endorsements - http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/guides/endorse.htm

Earnings Claims - http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2003/11/dojsweep.htm

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/11/wealthsys.htm

http://www.lawpublish.com/mlm.html

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1998/05/greenhorse.htm

17. Robert Fitzpatrick is one of the foremost experts and has served as an expert witness in many federal cases, been published on the subject of ponzi, and has been featured on nationally syndicated television shows speaking on the subject.

His website is one of the greatest resources for educating you self against ponzi and other related illegal scams:

http://www.pyramidschemealert.org/PSAMain/home.html

Mr. Fitzpatrick’s site is not another anti scam site where people post their grievances it is one of the most educational sites on the subject of ponzi and mlm legal battles on both side lines that you can read.

This article was written for the benefit of those who are truly interested in making educated decisions based on the laws that govern the businesses they are getting involved in.

There are many who will seek to excuse their illegal activities and continue to live in self deception.

That is fine. Everyone is entitled to their own decisions and opinions.  However, this article provides powerful education to the multitudes who desperately need it including newbies who keep posting questions about whether such scams “work” in various marketing forums around the internet.

Advertising Your Home Business on a Budget

Copyright © Stone Evans, The Home Biz Guy

When you are starting out in a new home business and no one knows who you are, one of the greatest challenges you will face is how to drum up new business.

If there were not people in your community or marketplace that you knew who needed your products or services, you probably would not have started your business to begin with. But, once you have talked to those who you personally knew who needed your what you offer, then your next task is to find others who will help keep your doors open.

Many people know that they must turn to advertising at some point in the future, but they hope that day will be long down the road. For some, this utopian concept will come to fruition. But for the rest of us in the real world, we must come up with creative solutions for meeting our home business advertising needs while working within our budget.

Most people have a misconception about having to spend lots of money in order to advertise their home business. When you start out, you honestly will not have much money available for advertising, and if you do, you should still spend it wisely.

Before you jump headfirst into the world of advertising, let me share some of the lessons I have learned concerning this most important topic.

LESSON #1

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg to advertise your home business, unless you fail to plan and fail to test.

As much as is possible, you should always test your advertising. If you jump in and start
dumping tons of money in to advertising without first testing your advertising, you might find yourself broke and without sales at the end of the road. Most people who commit this error write off their failure on the home business they chose or the economy or any of a hundred other excuses. But, if they are unwilling to take responsibility for their mistake, they will never learn from their mistake. Don’t let this be you.

LESSON #2

All testing should be done in blocks. If you begin to advertise simultaneously in newspapers, radio and television, how will you know which advertising is bringing people to your cash register? You won’t. All you will know that something might be working, but you will not know what is actually doing the trick.

Even if you tell people in your advertising to tell you how they found you, my experience shows that fewer than 10% of the people ever will tell you anything — and those people who do may not even get the facts straight! You cannot rely on your customers to tell you what advertising is working for your home business. You must put in the extra effort to know for yourself.

LESSON #3

Only when you have a proven and solid advertising portfolio should you venture to drop big bucks in an advertising campaign. Even then, you should be careful to keep further measurements to determine how much the maximum advantage of an ad would be.
Sometimes you might be able to reach ten times as many people, but depending on the kind of media and other factors, the additional exposure will only generate twice as many sales. Keep your eye attuned to situations like this to get the most from your advertising dollars.

LESSON #4

As Lesson #3 illustrates, sometimes your best advertising investment may actually cost you less money. When you are first starting out, whether you are running a home business or a business outside of your home, you need to be able to get people talking and thinking about your business.

If you are busy testing ads in media’s such as the newspaper, magazines, radio, and television, you need to learn ways of promoting your business that do not require large cash expenditures. A few examples are:

· Word of Mouth
· Business Cards
· Press Releases
· Non-Primetime Ads on Radio and Television

Here is more information about each type of low-cost advertising:

WORD OF MOUTH

This of course is the cheapest kind of advertising on the planet — it does not cost you anything. Ask your customers if they know anyone who could also use your products or
services. When they are happy with your offerings and service, they will be willing to tell you whom you can contact, and they will pass the word for you.

BUSINESS CARDS

You can usually pick up 500 business cards for about $20. When you do, hand them out. Do not give more than a couple of cards to each person. If they need more cards from you, they will ask. Some people are known to network with others on a regular basis. Some of these people are also known to be always looking for an extra few bucks. With these people, you can suggest to them that if they write their name on the back of one
of your business cards and the card is presented to you, then you will pay a referral fee to them. You do not have to offer much — sometimes one dollar is enough. Look at your home business and your offerings and decide how much would be a good referral fee.

PRESS RELEASES

Press Releases are a good source for generating news about your home business. The business editor at your local newspaper is always on the lookout for a good business story to fill the business news section of the newspaper.

Of course, the business editor understands the economics of running a paper and is more inclined to run your story if you buy advertising in his/her publication, but will still print
stories for special events and openings.

The important thing to remember about Press Releases is that it must be constructed in the form of a news story. Even if you are a sole proprietorship, quotes from you should be written in a third person format: John Doe said, “Your quote here.”

A Press Release should pack the most important information at the beginning of the copy, and leave extra details towards the end.  You should always provide the reporter who gets the task a simple and easy way for him/her to contact you directly. Often the reporter will want to contact you to get details that will enhance their take on your story.

NON-PRIMETIME ADS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION

Believe it or not, some of the best rates for radio and television are on the overnight and
non-primetime venues. These target times are not a total waste as they can easily keep the infomercial people in business.

These off-hours are just less populated than the primetime hours. Don’t be afraid to check your local radio and television rates for non-primetime hours to see what bargains may exist. With television, primetime is 7pm to 10pm. With radio, primetime is 8am to 5pm. This sure leaves a whole lot of hours available to advertise your home business at
discount rates!

IN CONCLUSION

When it comes down to it, there is a lot to understand about advertising, but when you have the basic knowledge down pat, everything will fall into place and bring more dollars to your bank account.
